Travel - 4th Green Flag

Background!

We have recently received our 4th Green Flag.

Travel is the fourth theme of the Green-Schools programme. The Travel theme is funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and supported by the National Transport Authority.

As part of their Action Plan, participating schools set their own Travel targets, with the ultimate aim of increasing the number of pupils walking, cycling, park 'n' stride, carpooling or using public transport, which will ease congestion by reducing the number of private cars arriving at the school gates.

By promoting sustainable transport modes (walking, cycling, car pooling or public transport), the schools will also improve pupils' safety, health and fitness. The journey to school is an ideal way for children to take part in regular physical activity, to interact with their peers, and to develop the road sense children need as pedestrians and cyclists. Alternative modes of transport also improve children's alertness. The schools will also lessen their overall impact on the environment, by reducing emissions and pollution.

Green-Schools Travel was rolled out nationally in September 2008 after a successful pilot programme in the Greater Dublin area.Since then we have worked, or are working, with over 1400 schools around the country to promote sustainable travel to school.

Over the four completed academic years of the programme participating schools recorded an average reduction in car journeys to school of 22% and an average increase in walking and cycling of 32% per year through the promotion of WOW days, COW days and other fun and inclusive activities. Green-Schools have dedicated Travel Education Officers throughout the country who are working closely with schools to support them through the 7-step process. The Travel theme is now acknowledged as a ‘best practice’ model for sustainable school travel within the international FEE network.

Have a read about our awards ceremony below.

Our green school outing.

On Thursday the 20th of May, we received our green flag for travel and transport as we have worked very hard to achieve our forth green flag. Two committee members, Rachel and Shawna and two teachers, Ms.O'Neill and Ms.Downey travelled to DCU to collect the flag. When we arrived we were greeted by some of the Helix staff and the head of green schools. We then took our photo with a green flag then we had some time to kill before the ceremony so we made a green school wish and tied it around a tree made of recycled products, and we were lucky enough to get another picture with a green flag and even the globe jumped in!

Then when it was finally time for the award ceremony to begin we took our seats and waited for everyone to settle down. When the room was quite, a woman called Anne Marie and the head of green schools said some words about how greens schools started. After we got on to the awards, there was a number of schools collecting their flags for different topics such as water, energy, recycling and just like us some schools were receiving their travel and transport flag. When they finally called Scoil Ide we walked up to the stage and we were given a flag and certificate. At the end Anne Marie congratulated the many schools participating in green schools this year.

Overall we, the committee and the teachers had an amazing experience; it turned out to be a fun filled day. We also got a green schools bag with a pencil made from recycled materials, a special greens schools pin and a water bottle. We were and will always be proud of our school.

Walking is better for us, (WOW)
So leave the car and the bus.
I say can you walk on Wednesday,
We say let's do it the healthy way
And we walk on Wednesday to the best school ever,
And we try our best to keep the air cleaner,
And we walk on Wednesday to the best school ever,
And we walk to our line and we get there together,
Say Walk, Walk, Walk
Say, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
