Challenge to Change

Our 'Challenge to Change' committee, comprising Tara, Megan, Grace, Aoife and Mia from 6th class, and Amanda, Lauren, Demi, Egle and Stacey from 5th class ; along with the whole school community, undertook a study of biodiversity in our school and in our locality this year.

The girls helped to raise awareness of the meaning of 'biodiversity' and helped to enhance the other children's learning through power-point presentations and project work. The senior classes went to 'Waterways Ireland' to attend a talk about biodiversity on our canals, and a guest speaker came into speak to the children in the Junior Classes about Biodiversity and Biodiversity in Ireland. Each class in the school completed work based on various animals, the life cycles of animals and plants and they surveyed animals found in the school grounds and green areas. Lots of classes planted flowers and vegetables. The girls also introduced Bird Feeders and Insect Hotels to the green area of our school. All of these initiatives have helped the whole school community to foster a greater appreciation for all life forms in our school. Completing this 'Challenge to Change' project has helped our entire school community to cherish, embrace and encourage all life forms at our school.

The girls had set out objectives for this project at the start of the year and they have worked very hard all year in order to achieve these. They have helped our school become a place where all life is respected, and where the science of nature is explored and celebrated.

The committee, along with girls from 4th class travelled to Kilkenny to the 'Challenge to Change' Exhibition Day on April the 27th where they presented their projects and took part in drumming and climate change workshops. The day began with a stunning performance by some of the 4th class girls of the song 'Children of '16'. They all had a wonderful day and we are very proud of them for all their hard work.
